Goalkeeper Luke Steele says he was ‘a bit embarrassed’ when the Oakwell pa system announced him as the sponsors’ man of the match against Leeds.
Steele played well, and pulled off some very good saves, but says that the likes of hat-trick hero Ricardo Vaz Te and midfielder Miles Addison were more deserving of the award.
But Steele was thrilled with his team’s thumping 4-1 success, which completed a Championship double over the men from Elland Road.
Said the Reds shotstopper: “The lads deserved that success. I thought we were better than them in every position. Every Barnsley player gave more than they did, man-for-man.
“When it was announced that I had been chosen as man of the match you could probably see me shaking my head and laughing! I was a bit embarrassed to be honest. Vaz and Miles Addison were superb.
“We lost Jacob Butterfield early on through injury but Vaz came on to get two-and-a-half goals! Obviously he’s claiming a hat-trick and was going round the dressing room getting the players to sign the match ball, but some of us are waiting to see the video evidence of his second goal. Craig Davies says he definitely got a touch, and there was a chance it was an own goal. But Vaz is having none of it, he says it is definitely his!
“To do the double over Leeds this season is a great achievement. It was a massive game, in front of a big crowd, and we rose to the occasion. It was a great team effort.
“Now we want to go and get the double over our other local rivals Doncaster on Monday.”
