Barnsley captain and main source of midfield inspiration Jacob Butterfield has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The 21-year-old was injured during the 4-1 win over Leeds United on New Year’s Eve, following a poor challenge by Michael Brown.
Butterfield limped off but manager Keith Hill hoped his star player would only be on the sidelines for three weeks.
However, a subsequent MRI scan has revealed that Butterfield has injured his anterior cruciate ligament.
He will have an operation on Friday and will be unable to feature for the Reds in the second half of the season.
The midfield ace is out of contract this summer but Barnsley have offered him a new deal.
