Supermarket giant Tesco has confirmed it intends to open an Express convenience store on the site of the Wilthorpe pub on Huddersfield Road in Barnsley.
Plans are expected to be submitted to Barnsley Council shortly. Tesco hope to have the store operational by early next year, but they have said that modifications to the front of the building would be kept to a minimum to preserve the heritage value.
It is thought that 20 jobs would be created, with recruitment targeted locally.
However, Ashish Patel, who owns the Yogi Convenience store a few hundreds yards from the proposed Tesco Express, is fighting the plans.
He started a petition and says that he already has almost 500 signatures.
