Barnsley Youth Choir has won big at the European Choir Games in Magdeburg, Germany.
The team of 58 young people – who were selected from the 250 strong choir – has been announced as winners of both the categories that it entered.
In an emotional results ceremony, the choir placed first in both Category C8: Jazz & Pop (The Champions Competition) and Category C9: Gospel and Spiritual (The Champions Competition).
In addition to winning both categories that it entered, the choir was also announced as winners of the GP5 Grand Prix of Nations Category.
The choir was only selected to compete in this top-level competition a few days ago, having impressed the artistic judging panel during its other category performances. The Grand Prix categories are strictly for the best choirs in the world, leaving no doubt that the team from Barnsley can now be classed as one of the world’s leading choirs.
Barnsley Youth Choir’s scores within each of its categories also saw them achieve Gold Diploma level, the highest level of recognition within formal choral competition.
The results are a staggering achievement for the choir in only its second major choral competition. Having achieved unexpected success at last years World Choir Games in Latvia, Barnsley Youth Choir was promoted from ‘Open’ competition level to ‘Champions’ competition level, meaning that they were required to compete against choirs of a much higher level at the European Choir Games.
The choir has had to raise over £40,000 to fund the trip
