Birdwell Wheelers’ racing season got off to a flying start last weekend.
On Saturday, in the first event at the new cycle circuit at Sandal, Shaun Dolby rode in the 40 lap Category 2/3/4 race organised by Barnsley Road Club.
Two riders went away from the off and stayed away for the whole race.
At half distance Dolby managed to get into a break of four riders but they were unable to shake off the pursuing group. With five laps to go two more riders broke away and in the ensuing sprint Dolby finished in a top 10 place.
On the same day Trevor Mayne rode Matlock CC’s 21 mile time trial on one of his favourite hilly courses. His time of 1h 1m 33s was good enough for 6th veteran and 12th overall.
The following day Wheelers Dan Taylor, junior Tom Booth and Greg Godley rode in Featherstone CC’s 10 mile time trial at Fairburn.
Taylor finished 5th in 22m 40s , Booth was 14th in 23m 40s, which placed him 1st Junior in a new course PB, and Godley also achieved a course PB in 25m 43s.
Sunday’s club run saw Dave Scargill, Dave Hudson, Austin Watson, Steve Myatt, Rodger Holmes, Rob Parkes, Shaun Dolby, John Woodhouse and Phil Adams ride a cold and wet 80 mile loop to Cawood.
The club’s next meeting is on Friday 10th March at Birdwell Community Centre, Rockingham Street, starting at 7.30, and prospective members are welcome to attend.
Sunday’s club run will meet at 9.15am at the Brewers Fayre roundabout Brampton and visitors are welcome.
