Reds finally get their man as Mallan makes the move to Oakwell

After a week of speculation and misunderstandings highly-rated 21-years-old St Mirren midfielder Stevie Mallan has joined Barnsley on a three-year deal.

It looked at one point earlier this week that the transfer had already gone through; then it transpired that the Barnsley bid had mistakenly been e-mailed to  the Scottish club’s fans’ website; but all has ended happily for the Reds – and head coach Paul Heckingbottom expressed his delight today.

Speaking to barnsleyfc.co.uk he said: “I said from the start that we wanted to get our business done early, so I am really pleased that the club has moved quickly and made this deal happen. We’ve just finished a strong season back in the Championship and we are looking to build on this, which I think helped Stevie in his decision to join us.

“I am really pleased that he can see his future at Oakwell. He has had some real admirers looking at him, but we have managed to fight them off to bring him here. He’s a young, stylish midfielder who loves to pop up and get a goal, so I think the fans will be excited to watch him.

“He has really bought into what we want to do here and has seen the rise that the club has had recently, so as soon as the opportunity came, he jumped at it.”

Speaking to Barnsley Player HD Mallan (pictured) said of the move to Oakwell: “I am very excited to take the next step in my career. Coming down to England to try to make myself better was something I always wanted to do.

“I definitely feel like Barnsley was the right choice to make, so I am excited to get working with the other boys. I have seen Barnsley come up from League One and finish 14th, which is an amazing achievement, so I am looking forward to getting started.”

He added: “I am very impressed with the set-up here. Compared with the stadia I have played at in Scotland this is massive. I’ve had a good look around Barnsley as well, and it seems a great town. I am excited to come down and work here.”
