Barnsley Football have confirmed today that they have completed the signing of Southampton’s 21-years-old defender Jason McCarthy on a three-year deal.
And head coach Paul Heckingbottom expressed his delight on the club’s official website. “I am really pleased to get Jason to join us,” he said. “We have been monitoring him for a while. It’s an exciting signing. I see him playing primarily on the right-hand side but he can also play at the heart of the defence.”
Having had considerable success on loan at League Two and then League One level, the 6ft 1ins McCarthy said it was the perfect next step for him to sign for a Championship Club, adding – “especially one like Barnsley.”
He went on: “As soon as I came and was walking around the place there was a real feel of the history of the club, and I got a really good impression from the manager straight away. It was a really easy decision to sign and I am absolutely delighted.”
McCarthy (pictured) made his Premier League debut for the Saints in a 3-1 away win at Crystal Palace, but since then he has been on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in League Two and Walsall in League One, and at both clubs he won their Supporters’ Player of the Year award.
He made 35 first team appearances for Wycombe in 2015-16 and played in all 46 League games for Walsall last season.
