The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup, made in the early hours of Thursday morning in Beijing, China, has opened up the intriguing possibility of a third Wembley appearance in the space of 17 months for Barnsley Football Club.
The Reds have been given a trip to Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur – providing they can beat Derby County in a delayed second round encounter at Oakwell on Tuesday, 19 September.
And Spurs are currently playing all their home fixtures at the iconic national venue this season while their new stadium is being built.
But Paul Heckingbottom’s side will have to wait until their clash with the Rams has been resolved before arrangements can be made for any potential return to Wembley, where they won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the League One play-off final the season before last.
The delay was brought about by the abandonment of Derby’s second round tie with Grimsby Town at Blundell Park due to a waterlogged pitch, County eventually coming out on top in the rescheduled meeting this week.
