Barnsley have beaten the transfer deadline with the significant signing of Aston Villa’s 25-year-old midfield player Gary Gardner on a season-long loan.
Gardner (pictured) has made more than 100 Championship appearances, including 42 for Villa last season and others on loan to Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest.
He scored his first goal for the Villans in last season’s 1-1 draw with derby rivals Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.
The former 6ft 2ins England Youth international could be in line for his Barnsley debut in the away fixture with Preston North End on Saturday, 9 September.
Expressing his delight at the signing, head coach Paul Heckingbottom told the club’s website: “He is an important addition who will give us greater flexibility in the squad.”
