Take-over speculation mounts as Oakwell chairman resigns

Barnsley chairman Maurice Watkins has announced that he is to leave the club, fuelling speculation of an imminent take-over by a Chinese consortium.

The former Manchester United director and lawyer, who was appointed in May, 2013, has issued a statement saying: “It is just over four years ago that the owner, Patrick Cryne, asked me to become chairman of the board of directors. I have decided that the time is right to move on. I wish the club, the players, the fans and the board every success.”
