After a quiet summer holiday period in the racing calendar, the Geared Up Cycles race team were back in action on Sunday (September 3), racing on the Hoylandswaine/Denby circuit, in the event put on by Holmfirth cycling club.
Dan Winfield and Tom Davison were riding for the Wombwell-based cycling shop and tried to make the race difficult from the off.
On the 2nd lap of six, Winfield attacked clear on the descent of Renald Lane and chased after Andy Cunningham of All Terrain Cycles who had already gone clear on his own.
Winfield was hoping for a small group to chase with him due to the tough wind conditions but no-one else fancied the hard work required for a breakaway this early in the race so Dan made the smart decision to drop back to the main peloton.
Andy Cunningham was on a mission though and pressed on solo, building a lead of well over a minute. With one lap to go this was down to around 30 seconds with the bunch chasing hard.
But it was Winfield who was determined to make the catch and again attacked hard and got clear of the main bunch, catching Cunningham and then attacking again and arriving at the finish line with time to celebrate a fantastic win.
Cunningham hung on to take 2nd ahead of the main group racing for 3rd.
Tom Davison came in 9th place in the peloton to round off a brilliant race for Geared Up Cycles.
