Barnsley Ladies 39 Kendal Wasps 10
The journey continued for Barnsley Ladies rugby team as they completed their second successive win at the start of the new season, and they now sit proudly at the top of the table.
It was another team, another challenge as Kendal were the latest to visit the Shaw Lane stronghold.
Not knowing what to expect from a team they had never played before, the ladies from Barnsley began by playing simple, controlled rugby and tt soon paid off, with Hailey Swann scoring in the first minute.
Kendal were, however, very game opponents and came back strongly. Barnsley had to defend stoutly against some high quality play, particularly from Kendal’s 12 and 15. Tackles were fierce and bodies were laid on the line.
Barnsley’s resilience again bore fruit when Claire Fisher scored a great try following some slick passing play.
Kendal came back with a try of their own from their talented full back, but Barnsley responded with a try from Alix Taylor before the break.
Although playing up the slope after the break, the intensity of Barnsley’s play did not diminish, the opposition being constantly on the back foot.
A try soon followed from Fran Copley, who was then involved in some fantastic interplay which saw Alix Taylor score what was probably the try of the match under the Kendal posts.
This was a classic case of forwards winning the game, and the backs deciding by how much, as Amber “The Bolt” Abdurahman scored two late tries to seal a comfortable win for the home side.
Kendal notched another try before the end, and should be congratulated for their spirited play with only 15 players available to them.
Players of the match for Barnsley were Jess Sayles and Hailey Swann.
