Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Mixed Programme 2017 brings the internationally acclaimed contemporary dance company to perform in the heart of Barnsley, showcasing three amazing works which promise to give audiences a gripping evening of beautiful storytelling through dance.
Named ‘Best Premiere’ as part of the Critics’ Choice in this month’s Dance Europe Magazine, Calyx, is the first of three dances. The beautiful new work is inspired by and based on the book of poems ‘The Flowers of Evil’ by Charles Baudelaire and explores the themes of beauty, desire and decadence.
With a live microphone at its heart, Maybe Yes Maybe, Maybe No Maybe by Aletta Collins, sees five dancers blend movement and voices to create a uniquely witty piece of dance. Teasing and playful but full of attitude, the work is set to music that transforms the dancers’ voices into the beats and creates a pulsing soundtrack.
To complete the show the company present Beast. This dance sends the audience into the darkest reaches of the mind, using six dancers in an unforgettable performance that explores the darker side of the human psyche. The dance requires extreme strength, giving the piece an often disjointed and fragmented look and making for a challenging, captivating piece of theatre.
‘The Leeds-based company can pride itself on being one of Britain’s most enduring dance institutions […] it’s never lost sight of its underlying brand – mixing the popular mainstream with the unexpected and unpredictable.’ – The Guardian (Phoenix Dance Theatre)
