Shaw Lane play tells the story of Brian Clough and ‘The Damned United’

After a well-received production of Life & Soul last month, Red Ladder return to Barnsley with the story of the famous Leeds United football manager Brian Clough – The Damned United.

The year is 1974 and Brian Clough, the enfant terrible of British football, is attempting to redeem his career and reputation by winning the European Cup with his new team, Leeds United; the team he has openly despised for years; Don Revie’s team.

Adapted from David Peace’s brilliant and ingenious novel, The Damned United tells the story of Clough’s 44 day stint at Elland Road and takes you inside the tortured mind of a genius slamming up against his limits, bringing to life the beauty and brutality of football, the working man’s ballet.

“Yes, this a play about football, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a tribute to an era-defining genius, a portrait of a man terminally wrapped-up in his own bravado, a study of loyalty and friendship under pressure…” The Stage

“A masterpiece of theatre” – Liverpool Sound and Vision.

The Damned United is a special Civic on Tour and Red Ladder Theatre Company partnership. bringing high quality theatre to local communities.

The Damned United is on Thursday 30 November at 8:00pm at Shaw Lane Sports Club, Shaw Lane, Barnsley S70 6HZ. Tickets are £7 and include a free drink.
