Barnsley artists nominated for international award

Best Art Vinyl, an international award celebrating the best in record cover design opened their first exhibition in Barnsley at the weekend and also announced this year’s fifty nominees.

Included in the list are two Barnsley artists – Kate Rusby with her first ever release on vinyl and Hannah Peel, whose album Mary Casio was recorded with a brass orchestra and whose record cover was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, famous for his work on Blackstar, David Bowie’s final album.

This year’s nominations also include albums by Gorillaz, Queens of the Stone Age, Katy Perry, Lorde, Father John Misty and Squeeze.

Now in its 12th year, Best Art Vinyl is a unique award celebrating record cover art, compiling the global opinion on the best in art, photography and graphic design in modern music culture.

This Autumn, Best Art Vinyl launch their first major retrospective award, showcasing the history of the award, with an up close look at over 225 record covers and the designers behind them.

Previous winners have included albums by The Last Shadow Puppets, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Radiohead’s Thom York, and nominated albums have featured artwork by varied and illustrious names, such as sixteenth century Dutch master Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Turner Prize nominee Jenny Saville, Sir Quentin Blake, Jamie Hewlett and legendary Pop artist, Sir Peter Blake.

Every year, the Best Art Vinly winner is chosen by the public. Visitors to the exhibition can cast a vote for their three favourite nominations. The vote closes 9th December and the winner will be announced 9th January.

BEST ART VINYL: 12 YEARS ON 12 INCHES is open at The Civic until 20 January 2018. Admission is free.
