Berneslai Homes has been working in partnership with Barnardos to raise awareness in identifying young carers.
The Young Carers Council designed an information card with QR codes to encourage young people to identify themselves as young carers. The card will enable them to access a wide variety of information and support from both Barnardos and Berneslai Homes.
Representatives from the Young Carers Council delivered the pilot presentation at Shafton ALC and shared some of their own experiences.
Following the presentation the information card was distributed to every pupil in the school.
Kate Phillips, from Barnardos, commented: “There are a lot of young carers in Barnsley. Many are unknown to the service and are unaware of the support available. Working with Berneslai Homes to develop the card has given us the opportunity to further raise awareness and potentially reach those young carers, providing them with the opportunity to access support and advice.”
Dave Fullen, Director of Customer and estate Services at Berneslai Homes, added: “Where we know a young carer lives in one of our properties we will be able to tailor our serves to meet their needs and take a little bit of pressure off, making things easier for the young carer.”
