On Sunday Birdwell Wheelers ran the re-organised 100 km Audax ride from Birdwell to Snaith and back via the Thorne flatlands.
It was originally postponed on 18th March due to snow, but the weather on Sunday was much more favourable.
Wheelers Steve Myatt, Tony Lodge, Tina Oakes, Chris Jenkins, Dave Hudson, John Woodhouse, Paul Mynett, Dave Scargill and Rodger Holmes were joined by 42 other riders from as far away as Leicester, Birmingham and Glossop.
The route took them through the quiet lanes around Askern and Womersley, climbing back up the Dearne valley back to Birdwell Community Hall, where club members provided post-ride food and drinks.
The Wheeler’s next Audax is a 100km event on Sunday 10th June. riding over Holme Moss and the Snake Pass from Birdwell, and the club invites riders to participate in the hilly challenge.
Also on Sunday Wheeler Paul Heggie rode in the City Road Club 15 Mile Open Time Trial at Newport in the East Riding. Despite a strong headwind on the out leg Heggie recorded a time of 37m 52s which broke his own club age record at 64 years old , set in March, by a margin of 1m 25s.
Unfortunately the first of the Wheeler’s club time trials on the 5 mile course at Thurgoland to Hoylandswaine roundabout and back had to be called off due to weather conditions, so next Tuesday will see the first event of the season.
