Mayne and Peasegood major winners at Wheelers’ awards night

Birdwell Wheelers Annual Prize Dinner was held at The Edmunds Arms Worsbrough last Saturday, when the club welcomed back ex-member Dan Taylor to present the prizes.

The two major prize winners were Trevor Mayne and Marc Peasegood.

Mayne won three of the major trophies – the Derrick Ogden Cup, Roadman of the Year Cup and the Best All Rounder Cup – as well as the club trophies the Wombwell Cup, the Hoyland Nether Cup and the Minto Cup.

Peasegood won the club event trophies – the Danum Cup and the Wentworth Cup – as well as the 5 mile handicap trophy.

The evening was also a celebration of club President Christine Minto’s 60 years of membership. Christine (pictured) joined the club as an 18 year old in 1959 and rapidly showed her prowess at time trialling. In 1969 she gained the women’s 24 hour competition record cycling 427.86 miles, a record which stood until 1983.

The following day Chris Jenkins and Dave Hudson rode a 60 mile loop to Laughton-en-Merthen.

This Sunday’s ride is a flat 50 mile loop to Snaith. Meet at Brewers Fayre Wombwell at 9:15am. Visitors are welcome.
