Former Reds’ boss dies aged 82

Barnsley Football Club have announced the death of former manager Jim Iley at the age of 82.

The West Yorkshireman played for Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, leading the Magpies to promotion from the First Division as captain in 1965.

His first spell as a manager was at Peterborough United and after a successful three-year spell there he was appointed Barnsley boss in 1973.

His five years at the helm was a constant struggle, but there is no doubt that he laid the foundations for eventual promotion back to the second tier of English football.
