‘Girl Power’ campaign wins national award for Berneslai Homes

Berneslai Homes are celebrating after their ‘Girl Power’ campaign won the Best Diversity Scheme at the national 24housing Diversity in housing awards.

Berneslai Homes’ Girl Power campaign aims to encourage females to apply for a variety of vacancies, including gas plumbers, electricians, joiners, bricklayers and apprenticeships.

In April 2018 they held their first ever ‘Girl Power’ event to showcase the exciting opportunities that are available to women in our construction division. There were interactive stalls for each trade, where staff and apprentices spoke passionately to delegates about the company and their roles.

Following the event delegates were then invited to a tour around the construction depot, giving them an insight into the work they do.

Berneslai Homes now have an annual event to increase their influence in Barnsley and reach out to more females through schools, work experience, wider communications and making links with other like-minded organisations.

Berneslai Homes Head of HR and Organisational Development Amanda Bennett said: “We are delighted to win this award. The Construction Industry is well known for being predominately male!  At Berneslai Homes we wanted to do something about this and encourage women to apply for our trade vacancies and apprenticeships. Women now equate to 5.8% of our construction workforce, which is higher than Barnsley’s average of only 2.1%.”
