Birdwell Wheeler Trevor Mayne made the trek ‘over the hill’ to ride the gruelling Saddleworth Mountain time trial which consists of two crossings of the Pennines. He completed the 18 mile course in 54-32 on a normal ‘road’ bike to finish in 17th place, compared to the winner’s time of 47-30 done on a time trial bike.
Saturday saw Hatfield Woodhouse, Doncaster, as the venue for the North Midlands District Championships, held within the Sheffrec CC 25 mile time trial event. Mayne did 57-28 to become the District 50-59 year-old men’s champion and Paul Heggie 1-5-08 for 3rd in the 60-69 year-old men’s category (see picture).
At the club’s second Tuesday evening club 5-mile time trial at Thurgoland, Chris Jenkins won on handicap and Dave Scargill was second, whilst Mayne was fastest on actual time with 13-18. Other times were: Tom Booth 14-05, Jenkins 14-34, Scargill 16-02, Roger Bacon 17-58.
Meanwhile, on the clubruns front, Dave Hudson, Steve Myatt, Dave Woodhouse, Marc Peasegood and Phil Adams headed over the Peaks to Hope, whilst Christine Minto went to Harthill before returning via Oldcotes. Lee Ellis led the club’s latest ‘C’ ride for non-members not used to riding in a bunch.
